The Tonga women’s rugby league team is gearing up for a crucial match against Samoa in the Pacific Bowl Championship set to take place at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva tomorrow.
Metanoia Fotu-Moala, a seasoned Tongan international, emphasized the team’s commitment to securing a victory in this significant clash. She acknowledged Samoa’s strong performance but stressed the importance of focusing on their own strengths as a unit.
Fotu-Moala recently made headlines by becoming the first local signing for the One New Zealand Warriors as they prepare for their return to the NRLW (National Rugby League Women) next year. At just 25 years old, she joins her older sister Teuila and twin sister Maatuleio as part of the family to secure a contract in the NRLW. Teuila previously enjoyed success with Brisbane, winning a premiership in the league’s inaugural season of 2018, before moving to St George Illawarra, while Maatuleio recently completed her first season with the Dragons.
Known as “Noia,” the front rower represents a significant milestone for the Warriors as their 11th signing, marking the first from grassroots rugby league in New Zealand.
The Tongan squad understands the intensity of the competition and the dedication required to reclaim their spot in the Pacific Cup Championship. Fotu-Moala highlighted the inspiration they draw from former players like Mele Hufanga, who continue to serve as role models for the current team members.
Fotu-Moala expressed pride in representing their nation, stating that the team comprises players from diverse backgrounds, making the experience feel deeply meaningful. With the team maintaining high spirits in their preparations, they are eager to deliver a strong performance for their supporters on game day.
