A serious bus accident occurred in Broadlands, between Rotorua and Taupō, injuring at least 15 Tongan workers who were part of the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) program. The incident took place just before 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road, with police confirming that the bus was the only vehicle involved.
By 10:00 a.m., at least 10 of the injured were airlifted to hospitals, including three individuals with serious injuries and two with moderate injuries. Five others with minor injuries were also transported for medical care.
Immigration New Zealand’s Pacific manager, Mike Sorensen, reported that the bus was carrying 30 RSE workers who had just arrived in New Zealand earlier that morning to start work with the employer, Mr. Apple, in Hawke’s Bay. It was confirmed that 13 workers were taken to various hospitals, and some were expected to be discharged later the same day. After the crash, another 17 workers continued their journey to Hawke’s Bay.
Gary Jones from Mr. Apple indicated that 21 workers were now expected to arrive in Hawke’s Bay by Sunday night, where staff would provide them with a warm meal prepared on their arrival. A physiotherapist and additional support staff would also be on hand to assist the workers as needed.
Sorensen emphasized that Immigration New Zealand would continue to offer necessary support to those affected by the incident. Meanwhile, local police have indicated that road closures would be in place for some time with diversions established at Ohaaki Road and Vaile Road.
This accident is particularly concerning as it marks the second serious incident involving RSE workers within just three months, following a tragic crash on State Highway One south of Auckland that resulted in the deaths of three workers in August.
Despite the unfortunate nature of this event, it is heartening to see the community and employers rallying around these workers to provide support during this difficult time. The quick response of medical services and the continued commitment from Immigration New Zealand and Mr. Apple to assist the injured workers are commendable. With appropriate care and support, those affected can hopefully recover well and soon continue their important work in New Zealand.
