Tongan Workers Injured in Bus Crash: What Happened?

Spread the love

At least 15 individuals were injured when a bus carrying Tongan workers rolled over near Broadlands, located between Rotorua and Taupō, early Sunday morning. The police confirmed that the bus was the sole vehicle involved in the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road shortly before 7:30 AM.

By around 10 AM, medical personnel had airlifted at least 10 of the injured to hospitals, including three with severe injuries and two sustaining moderate injuries. The remaining individuals had minor injuries, according to police statements.

The bus was transporting 30 RSE (Recognised Seasonal Employer) workers from the Pacific, who had just arrived in New Zealand earlier that day and were en route to Hawke’s Bay to start their jobs with Mr Apple, a local employer. Immigration New Zealand’s Pacific manager, Mike Sorensen, provided updates on the situation, indicating that 13 of the workers had been taken to various hospitals, with some expected to be discharged later that day and continue towards Hawke’s Bay.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Mr Apple’s Gary Jones shared that 21 workers were still expected to reach Hawke’s Bay that evening. To support the workers upon their arrival, staff had prepared warm meals, and a physiotherapist was on site to assist. Jones emphasized that additional support from District Health, Pacific Health, and counselors would be available for the workers, ensuring that their well-being was prioritized.

Immigration New Zealand reiterated its commitment to assisting those affected by the incident. Meanwhile, the road remained closed for ongoing investigations, with diversions set up via Ohaaki Road and Vaile Road.

This incident marks the second severe crash involving RSE workers within three months, as a previous accident in August resulted in the tragic loss of three workers on State Highway One south of Auckland.

In light of this unfortunate event, it’s commendable to see the swift action taken to ensure the welfare of the injured workers and the support being mobilized for them as they begin their journey in New Zealand. With continued assistance from local organizations and authorities, there is hope for recovery and a smooth transition for these workers in their new environment.
