At least 15 people sustained injuries when a bus carrying Tongan workers overturned in Broadlands, situated between Rotorua and Taupō. This incident occurred just before 7:30 AM on Sunday at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road, with police confirming that the bus was the only vehicle involved in the accident.
By 10 AM, emergency services had airlifted at least 10 individuals to the hospital. Among them, three are reported to have serious injuries, while two suffered moderate injuries. The remaining five had minor injuries.
The bus was transporting 30 Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers from the Pacific region, who had arrived in New Zealand earlier that morning. They were en route to Hawke’s Bay to begin their work with their employer, Mr. Apple. Mike Sorensen, Immigration New Zealand’s Pacific manager, noted that 13 of the workers were taken to different hospitals, and some are expected to be discharged later that day to continue to Hawke’s Bay.
Following the incident, it has been arranged for the remaining workers to be met with warm meals and support upon their arrival in Hawke’s Bay. Gary Jones from Mr. Apple indicated that a physiotherapist was on-site to assist the workers, and additional support from District Health, Pacific Health, and counselors would be available to ensure the well-being of those affected.
Immigration New Zealand is committed to providing ongoing assistance to the workers involved in the crash. Meanwhile, police have closed the road, although diversions are in place for drivers.
This unfortunate event marks the second serious incident involving RSE workers in a short span, as three workers lost their lives on State Highway One south of Auckland back in August.
In light of this incident, there are efforts being made to prioritize the safety and support of the workers involved. Communities rallying around individuals affected can help foster a sense of solidarity and hope during this challenging time.
