A Tongan Navy patrol boat, named Voea Ngahau Siliva, has successfully docked in Fiji’s waters ahead of a significant royal visit by Queen Nanasipauʻu Tukuʻaho. The visit, intended to celebrate the traditional installation of Ratu Tevita Kapaiwai Lutunauga Uluilakeba Mara as Tui Lau, is scheduled from July 8 to July 12, 2025.

The vessel arrived at the Republic of Fiji Navy’s Stanley Brown Base in Suva on Wednesday morning, following the completion of necessary diplomatic clearance procedures organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Fiji Navy Commander Commodore Timoci Natuva confirmed the smooth facilitation of the visit, emphasizing that support included berthing arrangements for the Tongan vessel.

While no formal joint naval exercises are planned, the visiting crew from Tonga paid their respects by presenting a traditional sevusevu to their Fijian counterparts. This gesture highlights the strong cultural ties and respect between the two nations’ naval forces.

Moreover, broader security arrangements for the royal visit will be coordinated primarily by the iTaukei Affairs Board and the Fiji Police Force, with assistance from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) already on Lakeba Island for operational needs.

This royal visit not only celebrates cultural heritage but also symbolizes the enduring friendship between Fiji and Tonga. It showcases how traditional practices can strengthen relationships among Pacific nations. The collective anticipation for this event is expected to inspire a renewed sense of pride and unity within the Lau communities and reaffirm the bonds that connect these neighboring countries.

Overall, the arrival of the Tongan Navy and the scheduled royal visit serve as a hopeful reminder of the importance of cooperation and mutual respect among Pacific Island nations, fostering dialogue and shared understanding for a brighter future.
