Geoff Turner has officially assumed the role of Police Commissioner in Tonga, a significant leadership transition for the nation’s law enforcement. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Tonga Police Headquarters in Nuku’alofa on Monday, with Chief Magistrate Loupua Pahulu-Kuli administering the oath amidst an audience of Deputy Commissioners and the Chief Legal Officer.

Turner, an experienced Australian national, brings with him a wealth of knowledge from his time with the Queensland Police Service and the Australian Federal Police. He steps into this position following Shane McLennan, who made history as Tonga’s first Australian Police Commissioner, serving from 2022 until April 2025.

The Tonga Police Force has expressed optimism regarding Turner’s leadership, stating, “Welcome Commissioner of Police Geoff Turner to Tonga Police; we wish you the best of days ahead as you lead Tonga Police into a new chapter of service and leadership.” His appointment is particularly timely as the force is prioritizing efforts to enhance public trust and tackle pressing issues such as organized crime. Recent initiatives, including the 2025 Tonga Police Women’s Advisory Network Conference, aim to emphasize leadership development and integrity within the force.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Turner is anticipated to strengthen community relations and uphold the rule of law throughout the Kingdom. Meanwhile, the farewell for previous commissioner Shane McLennan was marked with a proud parade at the Tonga Police College, attended by dignitaries including Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, where McLennan reflected on his 47-year policing career.

The Australian High Commission commended McLennan for his leadership contributions that led to safer communities, while the New Zealand High Commission acknowledged his efforts in advancing gender equality within the police force, highlighting significant increases in female representation across ranks.

Turner’s wealth of international experience and the continued support from his predecessors may foster a promising future for law enforcement in Tonga as the police force seeks to adapt to and manage new challenges effectively.

Overall, this leadership change is viewed with optimism as it presents an opportunity for focused reform and enhanced cooperation within Tonga’s police service, ultimately benefiting the community it serves.
