Tonga Votes in Monarchy-Run Election as PM Race Heats Up

Voters in the Pacific’s sole monarchy are participating today in elections to select 17 representatives for the Legislative Assembly. Additionally, nobles will cast their votes to elect nine representatives to serve alongside them.

The election is being monitored by the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat and is taking place across 200 polling stations, staffed by nearly 600 officials throughout the island group. Among the 71 candidates competing for parliamentary seats, eight are women, reflecting a growing commitment to gender representation in the region.

Election officials express optimism that voting will conclude as scheduled, allowing for the counting of votes to commence shortly thereafter.

In the race for the post of prime minister, there are four prominent candidates: the current prime minister, Dr. Aisake Eke, who has held the position for the past nine months; his predecessor, Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, who resigned prior to a no-confidence motion possibly influenced by King Tupou VI; and nobles Lord Fakafanua and Lord Tu’ivakano.

The Supervisor of Elections, Peter Vuki, has indicated that the results are expected to be announced later tonight. This election holds significant implications for the governance of the kingdom, further illustrating the democratic process in action amidst a unique monarchical structure.
