Tonga Triumphs in Thrilling Bronze Match at OFC U-16 Championship

Tonga achieved an impressive third-place finish at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, surpassing their performance from 2023. The team faced a challenge early on with the absence of Tyra Bagiante, who had to withdraw shortly before the match. Sophiana Moala stepped in and contributed significantly in the forward position for the Future Mataliki.

New Caledonia started strong, directing their attacks through Kinë Hmaen, yet struggled to convert their opportunities into clear chances. Their best moment came just before halftime when Hmaen received a crucial pass but was thwarted by a timely defensive play from Tonga.

The first half concluded without eventful action, but as fatigue set in, the match appeared poised to open up, with the outcome likely hinging on which team could better cope with the physical and mental strain developed over two weeks of rigorous competition.

The second half commenced with New Caledonia appearing more aggressive in their pursuit of a goal. Matha Bako nearly broke the deadlock with a powerful free-kick that was just managed by Tongan goalkeeper Temaleti Rauaao. Hmaen then appeared to score for New Caledonia after a swift counterattack, only to be ruled offside.

Just moments later, Tonga took the lead unexpectedly. Cienna Filimoeatu’s free-kick hit the crossbar, and Kuria Malohifo’ou was quick to react, tapping in the resulting rebound.

Regrouping quickly, New Caledonia ramped up their efforts to find an equalizer. However, they struggled to penetrate Tonga’s solid defense, where Tema Tonga and Losaline Tu’utafaiva effectively neutralized the threats posed by Hmaen and Kanë Dralu.

In a tense moment during the 85th minute, New Caledonia nearly leveled the score from a messy corner, but the follow-up shot went over the goal. Kessyna Nypie produced a remarkable save to prevent Moala from extending Tonga’s lead minutes later, yet New Caledonia could not regain their momentum, and the match concluded with Tonga celebrating their hard-earned victory.
