Tonga has achieved a significant milestone by finishing third in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, improving upon their performance from 2023.
The team’s challenge was amplified by the last-minute withdrawal of Tyra Bagiante, who was substituted by Sophiana Moala, who made a commendable effort up front for Tonga.
In the initial phases of the match, New Caledonia dominated, utilizing their key player Kinë Hmaen effectively. However, they struggled to convert their possession into clear scoring opportunities. Their best chance came just before halftime when Hmaen was on the verge of a breakthrough after receiving a well-placed pass, only to be thwarted by a timely tackle from a Tongan defender.
The first half saw little action, but as fatigue set in, both teams appeared poised to increase their offensive efforts, suggesting that the match would hinge on which team could better cope with the demands of the previous two weeks of competition.
The second half commenced with New Caledonia appearing more aggressive in their pursuit of a goal. Matha Bako nearly put her team ahead with a powerful free-kick that was skillfully saved by Tongan goalkeeper Temaleti Rauaao. Hmaen almost gave New Caledonia the lead following a swift counterattack, but her goal was nullified by an offside call.
New Caledonia’s frustrations mounted when Tonga unexpectedly took the lead just a minute later. A free-kick from Cienna Filimoeatu struck the crossbar, and Kuria Malohifo’ou was quick to tap in the rebound.
In response, New Caledonia rallied, pressing forward in search of an equalizer. Despite their persistent efforts, they could not penetrate Tonga’s solid defense, with Tema Tonga and Losaline Tu’utafaiva effectively managing the threats posed by Hmaen and Kanë Dralu.
New Caledonia came agonizingly close in the 85th minute with a corner that was poorly cleared, but the following shot went over the bar. Kessyna Nypie made an excellent save to keep New Caledonia at bay as the match drew to a close, ensuring that Tonga could secure their narrow victory.
