The Tonga Tala netball team is gearing up for the upcoming PacificAUS Netball series, which will take place in Brisbane from February 17 to 22 at the Nissan Arena. Despite having claimed victory in the previous four series titles, head coach Jaqua Pori Makea-Simpson acknowledges that the competition will be stiffer this time around.

Makea-Simpson expressed confidence in her team’s abilities but recognized the improvements made by rival squads. “The Australian First Nation side is back for their second year and will be our first matchup. They were really tough last year with their different styles of netball,” she explained. Additionally, Makea-Simpson cited Fiji and Samoa, who have both been closing the gap in competition, making the road to a fifth consecutive title more challenging.

The coach emphasized the importance of resilience in back-to-back matches during the tournament, stating, “We’re up for the challenge, and it’s going to be an incredible series.”

Notably, the team will welcome back long-time captain Hulita Veve, who missed last year’s series due to club commitments. Veve’s leadership will be instrumental as she brings experience and strength to the squad, which includes key players like the Palavi sisters and several Under-21 talents. Makea-Simpson highlighted the integration of younger players as crucial for their development, particularly with the Youth World Cup scheduled for later this year in Gibraltar, marking the first time Tonga has qualified for this event.

“We are fortunate to have a lot of depth in our team, and this series will provide invaluable exposure for our Under-21 players,” she stated. The commitment to nurturing talent aligns with Tonga Netball’s ongoing efforts to enhance the game on the island.

Reflecting on her relationship with Tonga and its people, Makea-Simpson expressed her deep connection and gratitude for being embraced by the community as she helps to develop netball in the region. The Tongan Tala’s journey serves as a testament to hard work, resilience, and the unwavering support from home, fostering hope for the team’s upcoming challenges.

As the team prepares for the series, the blend of experience and youthful energy within the squad promises an exciting tournament ahead.
