The Kingdom of Tonga has officially embarked on the journey to implement e-passports. The inaugural meeting of the Project Steering Committee (PSC) for the Tonga e-passport Project marked a significant milestone in this multiyear initiative aimed at modernizing national legal identity systems. This project not only seeks to enhance border security but also aims to advance digitalization within the public sector.

Chaired by Crown Prince Tupouto‘a ‘Ulukalala, the meeting gathered representatives from key government agencies, the Embassy of Japan in Tonga, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). A central topic of discussion was the introduction of secure electronic passports that comply with international standards for Tongan citizens.

The initiative is funded by the Government of Japan and highlights a mutual commitment to enhancing governance, resilience, and promoting safe and dignified mobility across the Pacific region. The IOM expressed pride in supporting Tonga’s efforts to improve secure identity systems and facilitate the global mobility of its citizens.

This progressive step reflects Tonga’s dedication to modernizing its identity management systems, which can significantly contribute to the country’s development and global integration. With the support from international partners, Tonga aims to bolster its infrastructure for secure travel while ensuring that its citizens can navigate the world with ease and confidence.
