Tonga PM Suspends Minister as ACC Launches Corruption Probe

Tonga’s Prime Minister, Dr. Aisake Valu Eke, has made the decision to suspend Minister Paula Piveni Piukala from his positions as Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, and Public Enterprises, following allegations of misconduct. This suspension arises from a formal report presented to the Prime Minister by the Anti-Corruption Commissioner (ACC), detailing serious allegations concerning the Minister’s conduct.

According to the government’s statement, the ACC has initiated a preliminary investigation into claims suggesting that Minister Piukala may have improperly interfered with the enforcement of a court order that prohibits a specific individual from leaving Tonga. As a proactive measure to ensure procedural fairness and uphold the integrity of the institution, the minister is suspended from all ministerial responsibilities pending the results of this investigation.

The ACC has emphasized that it is expediting the investigation, ensuring all involved parties will have a thorough and equitable opportunity to present their cases. This decisive action by the government underscores its commitment to uphold public confidence in governmental integrity during this critical period as the investigation progresses. The hope remains that this step will foster transparency and accountability within Tonga’s political landscape.
