A Tongan national and two locals appeared in court today facing serious drug-related charges, specifically possession of methamphetamine and cannabis. The accused, Mafua Afimeimounga, Mohammed Aziz, and Merelita Kubuna, have each been charged with possessing 2.26 grams of methamphetamine and 1.4 grams of cannabis. In a related matter, Afimeimounga is dealing with an additional charge regarding methamphetamine possession.

During the court proceedings, bail was denied for all three individuals. The prosecution emphasized the severity of methamphetamine’s impact on public safety and noted concerns regarding the possibility of the accused fleeing from justice. All three defendants have opted for Legal Aid representation and have been encouraged to formally apply for bail.

The case is set to return to court on July 25, and this event underscores broader issues surrounding drug enforcement in Fiji. Similar cases have been reported, notably where the judiciary has shown a commitment to tackling drug-related offenses decisively. For instance, recent articles reference various defendants appearing before the courts related to substantial quantities of methamphetamine, reflecting an ongoing crackdown by authorities.

This situation highlights the serious public health concerns associated with drug possession and trafficking in Fiji, and it is hoped that robust judicial actions will contribute to a safer community. The legal system’s decisive approach to these charges signifies a strong resolve to combat drug-related offenses, instilling public trust in law enforcement and the justice system.
