The Tonga National University (TNU) has welcomed Dr. Giulio Masasso Tu’ikolongahau Paunga as its first-ever Vice Chancellor, starting this month. This significant appointment aligns with the university’s second anniversary, having been established in January 2023.

As reported, Dr. Paunga brings nearly 40 years of expertise in public service and higher education. Previously, he held the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President for Regional Campuses and Global Engagement at the University of the South Pacific (USP) from 2014 to 2024. In this capacity, Dr. Paunga oversaw USP’s 14 campuses across 12 member countries, demonstrating his extensive leadership experience in the region.

His time at USP also included an acting tenure as Vice Chancellor and President during a particularly complex period for the university from February to August 2021. With a background in Tongan public service that included significant roles, such as Minister for Labour, Commerce & Industries, and Minister Responsible for Tourism, Dr. Paunga’s diverse experience will be a valuable asset to TNU.

Academically, Dr. Paunga holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in Economics from Daito Bunka University in Tokyo, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA. He is proficient in Japanese and has contributed to numerous publications on economic and social development.

The TNU Council has expressed strong confidence in Dr. Paunga’s ability to advance the university’s priorities, placing an emphasis on program accreditation and course development that caters to the needs of the Tongan people while celebrating Tongan language and culture.

The recent leadership changes at TNU come on the heels of former Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni resigning from his position as Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the University Council in December last year. Dr. Tangikina Skeen served as Interim Vice-Chancellor prior to Dr. Paunga’s appointment.

This pivotal moment for TNU, highlighted by Dr. Paunga’s extensive qualifications and commitment to regional education, presents an opportunity for the university to strengthen ties with the community and enhance educational offerings in Tonga. The future looks promising under his leadership, as he sets forth to guide TNU in its mission to address local needs and foster cultural education.
