The Office of the Interim Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga has announced that it has received a second written nomination for the role of Prime Minister-Designate. This nomination was submitted on Wednesday as the Assembly gears up to select a new head of government.

The nomination process, which is being overseen by Lord Tangi ‘o Vaonukonuka, will remain open until 4:30 PM on Friday, December 12. However, the names of the nominees will only be disclosed during a formal Assembly meeting, when members of Parliament convene to elect the Prime Minister-Designate.

This election comes on the heels of last month’s general election, in which all 26 electoral seats have been filled under the existing constitutional framework. Once the nomination period closes, the Assembly is expected to meet, likely on December 15, to conduct the voting process via secret ballot.

The successful candidate, upon being confirmed by the Assembly, will be formally presented to King Tupou VI for appointment. Until this process is completed, political uncertainty lingers, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming vote for Tonga’s governance and stability. The progress of these nominations and the forthcoming election signal a critical moment for the nation, potentially paving the way for a renewed era of leadership and direction.
