Tonga is setting its sights on improving defence, execution, and discipline ahead of the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup match against the Fiji Water Flying Fijians this Friday. Head coach Tevita Tu’ifua expressed the team’s determination to secure a victory on home ground, especially following their recent defeat to Samoa.
Tu’ifua highlighted the importance of the upcoming encounter, emphasizing that winning is crucial for advancing towards the knockout stages next week. Additionally, the match holds historical significance for both teams, marking an anniversary between Fiji and Tonga, making a strong performance essential.
He pointed out that Fiji’s speed poses a considerable challenge, and Tonga aims to enhance its own speed and ball handling to counteract their opponents’ strengths. “Possession is critical, so we cannot afford to give away possessions or penalties,” Tu’ifua remarked.
The coach acknowledged the blend of young and experienced players in the Fijian squad as a key factor, but reiterated that Tonga will focus on its own processes and leverage the advantage of playing at home. The match is set to take place at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku’alofa at 3 PM.
