Tonga’s Legislative Assembly has elected Lord Fakafanua as the new prime minister of the kingdom in a secret parliamentary vote held this afternoon. Interim Speaker Lord Tangi ʽo Vaonukonuka announced the results after formally notifying His Majesty King Tupou VI of the election outcome. Lord Fakafanua emerged victorious with 16 votes from the 26 members of the Assembly, defeating fellow candidate Dr ʽAisake Valu Eke.

Before the voting, both candidates presented their cases to the Assembly, with Dr Eke receiving endorsements from representatives Tevita Puloka, Semisi Sika, and Alani Tangitau, highlighting his support among the people’s representatives. In contrast, Lord Fakafanua’s candidacy was backed by nobles including Viliami, Latu Seventeen Toumo‘ua, and Lord Tuihaangana, showcasing the solid backing he received from noble peers.

After the ballots were cast under the oversight of the Interim Speaker, Lord Fakafanua was confirmed as the prime minister-elect, having secured more than half of the votes. In his initial comments, he expressed gratitude for the support from parliament members and emphasized the need for unity as Tonga navigates this transitional period post-election. He called for collaborative efforts to tackle the nation’s shared challenges.

Following the election of the new prime minister, the parliament also appointed Noble Vaea as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Noble Tu‘iha‘angana as Deputy Speaker. With two nobles now holding the most senior roles in Tonga’s parliament, this development signifies a notable concentration of noble representation in leadership positions.

This election marks a pivotal moment in Tongan politics, reflecting ongoing discussions about the balance between democratic practices and traditional leadership roles within the government. The nation looks forward to how the new leadership will address current challenges and foster unity among its people.
