Tonga secured third place at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, exceeding their performance from 2023. The team faced a setback with the last-minute withdrawal of Tyra Bagiante, which led to Sophiana Moala stepping in to play striker for Future Mataliki.

In the initial moments of the match, New Caledonia took control, channeling their attacks through Kinë Hmaen. However, they struggled to create significant scoring opportunities, coming closest to a goal just before halftime, when a key pass was intercepted by a quick Tongan defense.

The first half lacked highlights, but as fatigue began to set in, both teams looked to assert themselves in the second half. New Caledonia appeared more likely to score initially, with Matha Bako nearly breaking the deadlock with a long-range free-kick that was narrowly saved by Temaleti Rauaao. Hmaen had a disallowed goal that stemmed from a counterattack and was called offside.

Just moments later, Tonga struck first. Cienna Filimoeatu’s free-kick hit the crossbar, allowing Kuria Malohifo’ou to capitalize on the rebound and score.

Determined to get back into the match, New Caledonia pressed forward in search of an equalizer. Despite their persistent efforts, they struggled against Tonga’s solid defensive lineup. Tema Tonga and Losaline Tu’utafaiva effectively contained the threats posed by Hmaen and Kanë Dralu.

In the 85th minute, New Caledonia came close again when a corner from Bako created a moment of chaos, but the shot was missed. Kessyna Nypie made an impressive save to stop Moala shortly after, but New Caledonia was unable to regain control, ending the match in favor of Tonga.
