The iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu recently reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving the ongoing land lease issues affecting tenants on 701 acres of land in Toko, Tavua. In a public consultation held with Acting Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and TLTB CEO Solomone Nata, Mr. Vasu emphasized the importance of addressing both the concerns of the tenants and the landowners in the region.
The 999-year land leases have been a source of contention, leading to discussions focused on the legalities surrounding these agreements. Mr. Vasu remarked on the necessity of maintaining security for residents in Toko while also caring for the interests of landowners, an issue that has been a priority since the government took office in 2022.
He noted that discussions included plans to publish a public notice about the potential surrendering of the 999-year leases to help facilitate a resolution. This collaborative approach aims to foster dialogue among all parties and provide a platform for tenant concerns to be addressed.
In light of the ongoing consultations, stakeholders are hopeful that a balanced solution can be reached, benefiting both tenants and landowners as they work towards a sustainable resolution. This endeavor illustrates a proactive effort by the government to resolve long-standing issues through engagement and open dialogue.
Overall, the focus remains on fostering a sense of community and ensuring that the interests of everyone involved are duly considered, paving the way for a brighter future in Toko.
