The 2026 Tokelau general election results have been officially announced following last Thursday’s polling. Tino Vitale, General Manager for Tokelau’s National Office located in Apia, delivered the results. Voting took place on the atolls of Nukunonu, Atafu, and Fakaofo, with additional polling in Apia to accommodate Tokelauan voters residing in Samoa.

A key feature of Tokelau’s governance is the rotational leadership of the Ulu o Tokelau, the Head of Government, who is chosen from among the elected Faipule, or leaders, of each atoll. Alapati Pita Tavite from Nukunonu will take on the role next month during the first meeting of the Fono Fakamua, Tokelau’s Parliament, succeeding Esera Fofō Tuisano.

The results of the election reveal the newly elected leaders for each atoll. In Atafu, the Faipule is Kelihiano Kalolo, with Malala Lafaialii as Pulenuku and various representatives for Hui Taupulega and Hui Fatupaepae. For Nukunonu, Alapati Pita Tavite will serve as Faipule, with Petelo Patelesio as Pulenuku. Fakaofo’s Faipule remains Esera Fofō Tuisano, alongside his team.

This election not only marks a change in leadership but also coincides with a significant milestone: the centenary of Tokelau’s status as a territory of New Zealand. This anniversary could inspire reflection on Tokelau’s history and its future direction as it continues to evolve politically and socially. The democratic process is a vital part of this journey, indicating active civic engagement among the Tokelauan population.
