Toilets for Peace: A Step Towards Sanitation in Fiji

World Toilet Day is observed on November 19 each year to highlight the global sanitation crisis and promote access to clean, safe toilets for everyone. The focus for this year’s celebration was “Toilets are a Place for Peace,” marked by an event at the Vunibua Settlement in Fiji.

At this location, 17 out of the 47 families in the informal community now benefit from newly installed sewage systems, a significant improvement in sanitation. According to the Water Authority of Fiji, the local wastewater treatment facilities currently lack the capacity to handle all incoming sewage, making these installations particularly vital.

This initiative was made possible through funding from both the New Zealand government and the Fijian government. As a result, the 17 families connected to the new sewage pumps, particularly those contributing the most waste, now have improved sanitary options. An important feature of the new system includes two flush pedals: a small one for urination to conserve water and a larger one for solid waste that utilizes more water.

Looking ahead, RISE Fiji aims to connect the remaining families in the Vunibua settlement to the sewage system, with hopes of completing this project by 2025.

In light of sanitation issues, the Water Authority of Fiji has been emphasizing proper usage of toilets, urging citizens to be mindful of what they flush. Items such as rags, tampons, medication, and cigarette butts can cause serious blockages in the sewage system. Only toilet paper should be flushed, as it breaks down more easily.

RISE Fiji is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and the Water Authority of Fiji on broader initiatives aiming to provide access to proper wastewater systems throughout Fiji by 2030.

This timely focus on sanitation not only addresses current challenges but also lays the groundwork for a healthier and more environmental-friendly future for communities in Fiji. Through ongoing projects and public awareness campaigns, there is a hopeful outlook for substantial improvements in sanitation practices and facilities across the country.
