Toilets for Peace: A Community Transformation in Fiji

World Toilet Day is observed every year on November 19, aiming to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis and advocate for clean and safe toilets for everyone. This year’s theme, “Toilets are a Place for Peace,” was celebrated in the Vunibua Settlement, where 17 families out of 47 in the informal community have received new sewage systems.

According to the Water Authority of Fiji, the existing 11 wastewater treatment plants are currently unable to handle the volume of wastewater they receive. To address this issue, the New Zealand and Fiji governments have partnered to install sewage pumps for the 17 families contributing significantly to the community’s waste.

The initiative includes the use of dual flush systems, designed to conserve water— a smaller pedal for urine and a larger one for solid waste. This not only promotes better hygiene but also supports water conservation efforts. RISE Fiji expressed its commitment to connecting the remaining families in Vunibua Settlement to the sewage system, with hopes that this will be accomplished by 2025.

In addition to these advancements, the Water Authority of Fiji is urging the community to be mindful of what they flush down their toilets. Items such as rags, towels, tampons, medication, and cigarettes are problematic for sewage systems. The authority emphasizes that only toilet paper should be flushed as it breaks down easily.

Collaboration continues among RISE Fiji, the Ministry of Health, and the Water Authority of Fiji, who aim to ensure that by 2030, all Fijians will have access to proper wastewater services. This endeavor not only enhances public health but also fosters a more sustainable and hygienic environment.

In summary, World Toilet Day highlighted important advancements in sanitation within the Vunibua Settlement, with a clear path toward better waste management for the future, showcasing hope and progress in improving living conditions.
