The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has made significant progress in reducing rental arrears, successfully lowering the total by $9.6 million in just six months. The total debt decreased from $31.6 million at the start of the year to $22 million by June 30. CEO Solomone Nata emphasized that this reduction demonstrates TLTB’s unwavering commitment to collecting rent and ensuring that landowners receive what they are owed.

The board has implemented a robust recovery plan that includes strategies such as court-ordered utility disconnections and land reclamation. Currently, 534 cases of arrears are in court, while an additional 765 cases representing $4.7 million in unpaid rent are being prepared for legal action. The number of agricultural lease arrears has also significantly declined, dropping from 9,651 to 6,104 cases, which represents a 22.2 percent decrease, allowing over 3,500 leases to be paid and thereby eligible for renewal.

Nata has urged tenants to address their arrears expediently to avoid legal consequences such as utility cut-offs and land repossession. He pointed out that the TLTB offers flexible payment plans to assist tenants, inviting them to reach out to the nearest office or call customer service for assistance.

Previously, TLTB has adopted various measures to manage unpaid rents effectively, including public announcements about defaulters. The organization’s dedication to balancing enforcement with support for tenants highlights its aim for cooperation, encouraging open communication.

This proactive approach by TLTB not only serves to stabilize the financial situation for landowners but also fosters a constructive environment for tenants, where mutual understanding and timely action can lead to beneficial outcomes for both parties. As TLTB continues its initiatives, there is a hopeful outlook for improved relationships between tenants and landowners in the community.
