The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has recently resolved a longstanding financial issue by disbursing $150,000 to the Mataqali Navunibua of Nayavu, Tailevu. This payment addresses an error involving royalty payments related to gravel extracted from their land by the Public Works Department (PWD) during the construction of the Kings Highway in 2008-2009.

The TLTB acknowledged that due to a records mishap, the royalties intended for Mataqali Navunibua had been incorrectly allocated to another group. Following a comprehensive examination and legal discussions, TLTB finalized the payment, which now concludes a High Court case initiated by the Mataqali in 2019. The matter was formally settled through a Deed of Settlement in December 2024.

In its statement, TLTB reaffirmed its commitment to engage with all landowners to ensure the administration of iTaukei land is conducted fairly, transparently, and respectfully, aiming to benefit the indigenous communities effectively. This positive resolution highlights the board’s efforts to rectify past errors while empowering local landowners.

This incident is reflective of TLTB’s broader initiatives focusing on historical grievances concerning land management in Fiji, striving to enhance community trust and promote economic development among indigenous populations. Such financial reparations not only correct historical injustices but also serve to strengthen communal ties and foster sustainable development opportunities for the iTaukei peoples.

The satisfaction from this resolution can spur continued collaboration between the TLTB and landowners, leading to a hopeful outlook for ongoing improvements in land rights and administration in Fiji.
