The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) is taking strict action against tenants who have failed to pay their rent, as highlighted by the disconnection of electricity and water supplies for a home in Delailasa. CEO Solomone Nata emphasized that the tenants in question had only made one rental payment this year despite previously agreeing in court to settle their arrears by 2024. “They ignored all warnings,” he noted, stressing the board’s responsibility to landowners, which includes legal actions against tenants in default.

Although utility disconnections can be distressing, Nata pointed out that such measures often catalyze tenants to address their overdue payments. TLTB has made several attempts to assist tenants, including issuing multiple notices, running awareness programs, and offering flexible payment plans, but the response has been limited. It’s crucial that tenants treat TLTB notifications seriously to avoid legal repercussions.

This situation is not isolated; a similar initiative in the past emphasized the seriousness with which TLTB is tackling the issue of unpaid rents. Over 25,000 tenants have been identified as breaching their leases, resulting in arrears exceeding $28.1 million. In light of these figures, TLTB has issued court orders and is actively urging tenants to engage with their office to find a solution before facing further legal penalties.

The board’s commitment extends beyond just enforcement; it is focused on fostering dialogue that can lead to mutually beneficial resolutions. Regular communication can help tenants maintain their residences while allowing landowners to receive their rightful compensation.

The hope remains that through these measures and open channels of communication, a collaborative environment can be created, benefiting both parties involved. Prospective solutions may pave the way for financial stability, supporting not just individual households but also the broader community health.
