The future of a beloved tourism destination, Tivua Island, is uncertain following its recent acquisition by rival South Sea Cruises. Previously owned by Captain Cook Cruises, this island has been a key attraction for international tourists and has a rich legacy, having been founded over 35 years ago by indigenous Fijian entrepreneur Semi Koroilavesau. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic, Captain Cook Cruises maintained its operations, showcasing its tenacity in the tourism sector.
The transfer of ownership suggests that Fiji may not be fully equipped for luxury expedition cruises, as Captain Cook is unable to compete with the superyacht market. In November 2023, the company leased the MS Caledonian Sky, which replaced the Reef Endeavour, but it was deemed too expensive by international visitors. Consequently, the vessel has since returned to the Mediterranean.
Although Captain Cook Cruises will continue offering day cruises to Tivua Island under new general manager Robert Wade, the arrival of South Sea Cruises, backed by Fijian Holdings Limited, introduces new dynamics into the industry. Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, heralded the transition, noting that South Sea Cruises’ strong marketing and logistics would provide seamless continuity.
Plans are in motion for major redevelopment of Tivua Island after May 2024, with ambitions to enhance the experience for visitors. South Sea Cruises aims to complement the surge in hotel and resort developments in the Nadi and Denarau regions, ensuring better opportunities for travelers to explore Fiji’s natural beauty. The newly redeveloped Tivua Island is expected to reopen in 2026, alongside existing attractions including South Sea Island and Malamala Beach Club, enhancing the options available to tourists.
