A significant shift in Fiji’s tourism landscape is underway following the sale of Tivua Island, a well-known day cruise destination, to South Sea Cruises, a competitor in the market. This news has left many in the tourism industry questioning the future of the iconic location.

Tivua Island was previously part of Captain Cook Cruises, which has been a staple in Fiji’s tourism sector for over 35 years. Founded by Semi Koroilavesau, a prominent indigenous Fijian leader, Captain Cook Cruises had established a strong brand, continuing operations through challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which many other operators suspended. However, the recent acquisition suggests a shift in competitive dynamics, particularly in the luxury cruise segment where Captain Cook struggled to maintain its foothold.

With the transition of ownership, South Sea Cruises – now backed by Fijian Holdings Limited – is poised to redevelop Tivua Island following its closure in May for significant upgrades. These plans aim to elevate the island’s status as a premier day trip destination. Brent Hill, the CEO of Tourism Fiji, expressed optimism about the redevelopment. He believes that the enhancements will substantially contribute to Fiji’s tourism, providing visitors with even greater experiences while showcasing the natural beauty of the region.

Moreover, South Sea Cruises is planning to launch a new fast-boat service under the South Sea Cats brand in 2025, demonstrating their commitment to expanding and enhancing tourism offerings in Fiji. The redevelopment of Tivua Island, set for reopening in 2026, is envisioned to complement ongoing hotel and resort projects in the Nadi and Denarau areas, fulfilling the demand for high-quality day experiences among international guests.

As these changes unfold, Captain Cook Cruises will focus on its own day cruise services under the leadership of new general manager Robert Wade. This transition presents an opportunity for both companies to innovate and improve their services in response to shifting tourism trends.

In summary, while the sale of Tivua Island marks the end of an era for Captain Cook Cruises, it also opens the door for exciting new developments aimed at enhancing Fiji’s tourism offerings. This proactive approach can potentially lead to a revitalized and more diversified tourism industry in the region, which holds promise for both guests and local businesses.
