A significant change in Fiji’s tourism landscape has emerged with the acquisition of Tivua Island by South Sea Cruises, a rival operator, which has left many wondering about the future of this beloved day cruise destination. Captain Cook Cruises, which had established the island as a premier spot for international visitors over the past 35 years, will continue to offer day cruises to Tivua under the leadership of their new general manager, Robert Wade.

Originally founded by indigenous Fijian entrepreneur Semi Koroilavesau more than two decades ago, Captain Cook Cruises had partnered with Captain Cook Australia to reinforce its local identity. Throughout the COVID pandemic, the company showcased remarkable resilience by maintaining operations when many others paused.

However, the shift in ownership indicates that Fiji’s luxury expedition cruise market remains challenged. Captain Cook recently leased the MS Caledonian Sky, which had replaced the Reef Endeavour in late 2023, but found the venture financially unsustainable, leading to the vessel’s return to the Mediterranean.

South Sea Cruises, now the new owner of Tivua Island, plans to close the island after May for a comprehensive redevelopment aimed at enhancing the visitor experience. This aligns with the ongoing surge in hotel and resort developments in the Nadi and Denarau areas. Tourism Fiji’s CEO, Brent Hill, expressed optimism about the transition and anticipated improvements that would elevate the tourist experience on Tivua Island.

The redevelopment is expected to blend world-class hospitality with the island’s natural beauty, featuring pristine beaches and coral gardens. South Sea Cruises intends to unveil its plans for the new Tivua Island over the next few months, with an anticipated reopening in 2026 that will expand on their current offerings, including South Sea Island and Malamala Beach Club.

As the tourism landscape evolves, the focus on improved experiences and attractions illustrates a committed effort to maintain Fiji’s reputation as a leading travel destination. Looking ahead, this redevelopment may not only benefit the tourism industry but also offer greater opportunities for local communities to engage with visitors, fostering a more vibrant tourism economy in Fiji.
