A significant change is underway in Fiji’s tourism landscape as the popular day cruise destination, Tivua Island, transitions to new ownership under rival operator South Sea Cruises. This shift comes as the original owner, Captain Cook Cruises, who has served the area for over three decades and continued operations during the COVID pandemic, faces a challenging market for luxury cruising.

Founded by prominent indigenous Fijian leader Semi Koroilavesau, Captain Cook Cruises established a strong brand through partnerships but now finds itself adjusting to increased competition. The previous vessel leased, MS Caledonian Sky, faced criticism over costs, leading to its return to the Mediterranean, and highlighting the financial difficulties in the luxury cruise sector where Captain Cook could no longer maintain its edge.

Moving forward, Captain Cook Cruises will keep offering day cruise services to Tivua Island under new general manager Robert Wade, who previously managed the Hideaway Resort along the Coral Coast. Meanwhile, South Sea Cruises, now owned by Fijian Holdings Limited, is set to enhance the island experience with redevelopment plans aimed at creating a world-class destination, poised to complement the rising number of hotel and resort projects around Nadi and Denarau.

Tourism Fiji’s CEO, Brent Hill, expressed optimism about the changes, emphasizing the potential enhancement of the tourism scene through revitalized offerings. He noted that the transition could elevate tourist experiences and simultaneously ensure that Captain Cook Cruises continues to thrive with its multi-island day cruise services.

South Sea Cruises plans to close Tivua Island for redevelopment in May, with a reopening scheduled for 2026. New developments promise to include upgraded facilities and exceptional hospitality, providing visitors with a chance to explore Fiji’s stunning beaches and coral gardens.

In conclusion, while this transition may signal uncertainty for Captain Cook Cruises, the collaboration between these two companies presents an opportunity for growth and innovation within Fiji’s tourism sector. The redevelopment of Tivua Island holds promise to attract more visitors and enhance the overall travel experience in the region.
