The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents to register their children with the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Registry ahead of the upcoming school year. During a recent visit to Bua, where he launched BDM services at various Post Fiji locations, Turaga emphasized the importance of official registration.

“Every child born on this earth comes from a family, a mother and a father,” remarked Mr. Turaga, stressing that parents bear the responsibility of ensuring their children are registered officially. He explained that the decision to decentralize BDM services was aimed at making the process more accessible to families, particularly in rural areas.

Ministry officials found that many children remain unregistered due to a lack of awareness, financial constraints, or negligence. By offering BDM services closer to home, families in Bua can avoid the long trips to Savusavu or Labasa.

Turaga also highlighted that accurate registration is vital for effective policy-making, allowing the government to understand demographics and better plan for community needs. With these new services, there is a significant opportunity for families to take action.

Overall, this initiative signifies a positive step towards improving access to essential services, ultimately benefiting families and communities throughout the region.

Comment: This outreach by the government demonstrates a proactive approach to ensuring that children receive their basic rights and recognition, which will aid in their future educational and social opportunities.
