Mark Evans, the outgoing chief executive of the Fijian Drua, has emphasized the critical importance of time and improvement in the ongoing development of rugby in Fiji. In his recent comments to the media, Evans pointed out that the growing competition within the sport challenges the Drua and requires a unified effort at multiple levels to enhance the overall trajectory of rugby in the nation.
Evans shared a message aimed at both the players and the entire organization, indicating that there is still substantial potential for growth. “We are nowhere near where we could get to, or I think we will get to,” he remarked, acknowledging the increasing difficulty of clinching the Super Rugby Pacific title amidst stiff competition.
The chief executive noted that achieving success in this prestigious league would necessitate patience and strategic development due to the long-standing dominance of more established teams with decades of history, superior facilities, and well-established youth programs. “It will take a bit of time because we want to win the thing,” he stated, underscoring the commitment to elevating the Drua’s performance.
Improving rugby in Fiji, according to Evans, requires comprehensive enhancements throughout the country’s rugby infrastructure. He highlighted the Drua’s relationship with the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, noting that the synergy between the club and the national team fosters stronger competition and unity within the sport. This relationship has been pivotal, as evidenced by the national team’s impressive achievements on the international stage, including notable performances at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Evans remains optimistic about the future of Fijian rugby, especially with the national team’s upcoming participation in the Nations Championship next year, which he believes will further bolster the sport’s growth in Fiji. As the Drua continues to work towards its goals, the focus on improvement and strategic development aims to keep building on the strong legacy of rugby in the nation.
