The National Fire Authority (NFA) is advising homeowners to replace their electrical wiring every twenty years, as prolonged use can lead to deterioration and safety hazards. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane emphasized that after two decades, the insulation of electrical wires may crack or dry out, significantly increasing the risk of electrical fires and shocks.

Sowane listed several indicators of aging or faulty wiring. Homeowners should be attentive to frequent circuit breaker trips, flickering or dim lighting, discolored outlets, burning smells, warm outlets, and any old or damaged insulation. He urged homeowners to remain vigilant and ensure that flammable materials are securely stored away.

This awareness call follows a series of residential fires that have recently occurred in Fiji, prompting the NFA to espouse fire safety. In a related warning, Sowane noted that these fires were largely preventable. Homeowners are advised to turn off appliances when not in use, safely store flammable substances, and perform regular checks on their electrical systems.

By adopting proactive measures, homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of fire incidents, thereby enhancing household safety. The NFA’s ongoing safety campaigns remind us that vigilance and preventive actions can go a long way in protecting families and homes from potential fire hazards.
