As the 2025 academic year kicks off, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on parents and students to enhance discipline, particularly regarding time management. His remarks come as hundreds of students return to school after a seven-week break.

Highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in education, PM Rabuka emphasized that effective discipline is crucial for both parents and children in managing educational activities. He pointed out that many academic results indicate a lack of disciplined use of time for educational purposes. “I hope the parents will take advantage of the assistance they are receiving from the Government and also play their role in this collective responsibility in education for our children,” he stated.

Rabuka’s call aligns with recent sentiments expressed by various educational leaders who believe that greater parental engagement can lead to improved academic outcomes. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has echoed similar sentiments, pointing out the decline in student success rates and advocating for increased involvement from parents at home to support educational achievements.

In a related note, the Fiji Teachers Union has also recommended that parents assess their children’s past academic performances and establish achievable goals for the upcoming year. This proactive approach not only reinforces the importance of parental support but also fosters a nurturing environment for students to thrive academically.

With government support initiatives in place, such as the $200 Back-to-School aid for families of low-income students, there is a tangible effort to ease financial burdens while encouraging a collaborative approach to education. By working together, parents, teachers, and community leaders can create a positive educational landscape that holds the potential for significant improvements in student performance and outcomes across Fiji.

In summary, the Prime Minister’s call for discipline and the emphasis on parental involvement represents a hopeful step towards elevating the standards of education in Fiji. With combined efforts, there is optimism for a successful academic year and a brighter future for students.
