Timber Treatment Under Scrutiny: What You Need to Know!

The Ministry for Forests and Fisheries is overseeing the operations of all timber treatment plants nationwide, in accordance with the Forest (Timber Preservations) Regulation 1992. In reaction to comments made by Opposition MP Premila Kumar regarding the ministry’s role in the timber treatment status in Fiji, Minister Alitia Bainivalu confirmed that there are 29 registered timber treatment plants, with 14 licensed to operate this year.

Bainivalu explained that these plants are issued licenses annually and are subject to quarterly monitoring. This assessment focuses on operator competence, health and safety measures, and quality control. Timber samples are collected monthly for testing to measure the concentration and penetration of preservative chemicals, ensuring adherence to required standards.

The primary aim of treating timber with chemicals is to protect it from insect damage and fungal decay, effectively increasing its durability and lifespan. She noted that without treatment, many timber species, like pine, would not be suitable for use in exposed or ground contact environments.

“Timber treatment significantly extends the service life of the material, particularly for species with lower natural durability classes, including some native timbers and major plantation species,” she stated. However, she clarified that chemical treatment is not mandatory, as untreated timber from certain species, including pine, can be used effectively for specific applications, particularly non-load-bearing situations and those out of ground contact.

Bainivalu also mentioned that certain native species have naturally durable heartwood that does not require treatment. She emphasized that consumers have the option to purchase either treated or untreated timber based on their needs, stating, “It is only when a timber processor chooses to implement timber treatment that the current legislation is invoked to ensure compliance with specific quality and safety standards.”
