The Ministry of Fisheries in Fiji has actively undertaken a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainable aquaculture and bolstering food security in rural communities across the Northern Division. The Aquaculture team’s recent activities reflect a commitment to developing local fish farming practices that can significantly impact economic resilience and community well-being.
In Vuniuto Settlement, Nasarawaqa, the team observed promising growth in tilapia fish with an average weight of 197 grams during a sampling exercise. Fisheries officers have urged local farmers to adhere to consistent feeding regimens in preparation for the upcoming November harvest, which is anticipated to enhance both productivity and profitability.
Furthermore, in Raviravi Settlement, Nabouwalu, a notable initiative was launched with the release of 5,000 tilapia fry aimed at bolstering local fish farming efforts. This release is designed to create new income opportunities for farmers while also increasing access to affordable protein sources in the region.
Site assessments conducted in Komo, Nakama, Lagi, and Seaqaqa further confirmed the areas’ strong potential for aquaculture expansion, primarily supported by reliable road access, water availability, and power supply. These assessments are part of a comprehensive strategy under the Fisheries Funding Support Program, which provides both technical and financial assistance to help rural farmers establish and sustain their fish farms.
The Ministry emphasized that these initiatives align with Fiji’s broader goals under the Fisheries Funding Support Program and strengthen its commitment to sustainable fisheries, community empowerment, and the growth of the blue economy. Such efforts are vital to ensuring that aquaculture continues to play a crucial role in enhancing food security and promoting economic resilience throughout the Northern Division.
