Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for accepting his offer to temporarily step aside from his position as Immigration Minister. Tikoduadua communicated this sentiment through a post on his X account, reinforcing his commitment to continuing his duties as Minister for Defence and Veteran’s Affairs in service to the Fijian people.
This decision comes in the wake of serious scrutiny regarding the Immigration Department, particularly concerning allegations that unauthorized passports may have been issued to children of individuals connected to the Grace Road human rights controversies. Tikoduadua’s move to step aside aims to facilitate an unbiased investigation into these claims, ensuring transparency and accountability.
In light of this situation, Prime Minister Rabuka announced that the Immigration Department and Fiji Police Force will now fall under his direct oversight, effective immediately. Meanwhile, Tikoduadua retains his responsibilities for defence, veteran affairs, and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).
This situation underscores a commitment to integrity within Fiji’s governmental operations, signaling a willingness to address issues transparently. It reflects a notable step toward ensuring that public trust is maintained amidst allegations of misconduct.
It is hoped that this proactive approach will lead to a thorough investigation and ultimately reinforce the integrity of Fiji’s immigration processes. With dedication to robust inquiries and accountability, the situation presents an opportunity for positive reform and restoration of public confidence.
