AS Tiga Sport has clinched a spot in the semi-finals of the OFC Men’s Champions League 2025 after a dramatic 1-1 draw with AS Pirae at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara. The match was pivotal, as both teams approached it knowing a victory for Pirae would secure their advancement, while Tiga only needed a draw to move forward.
The Tahitian team took the lead at halftime through Etienne Tave, who scored in the 34th minute after capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Yohann Tihoni. It was AS Pirae’s first goal from open play in the group stage, putting them in a commanding position. Tiga Sport, however, mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, driven primarily by the exceptional play of Gérard Waia.
The New Caledonian club’s fortunes changed when they earned a penalty after Waia was fouled in the box by Matatia Paama. Mikael Partokridomo stepped up to equalize in the 65th minute. The situation for Pirae worsened shortly thereafter when Taniava Barsinas received a direct red card, followed by a second yellow card shown to Tave, reducing them to nine men.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Pirae pressed for a late winner but could not convert their opportunities. With this result, AS Tiga Sport not only secures their first semi-final berth in this competition but does so after not having played a competitive match since May 2024 — a remarkable achievement showcasing their resilience.
AS Tiga Sport will join Auckland City FC in the next round, awaiting the winner of Group B in Wednesday’s semi-final match. This highlights a significant achievement for the club and a chance to make history in the upcoming rounds.
The previous performances of Tiga Sport’s national team players in recent competitions have likely contributed to their newfound confidence. As they advance in the tournament, the hope is that this momentum will translate into further success. The excitement surrounding Tiga Sport’s participation in the semi-finals reflects the potential for growth in New Caledonian football within the Oceania region.
