The Papua New Guinea Lagatois women’s national football team played to an exciting 2-2 draw against Fiji’s Kulas during the first of two international friendlies at the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby. This match not only showcased the talents of both teams but also served as essential preparation for the upcoming 2025 OFC Women’s Nations Cup, which Fiji will host in July.

Fiji’s Caroline Qalivere scored the opening goal, granting her team a 1-0 lead before PNG answered back with a quick equalizer from striker Marie Kaipu, ending the first half tied at 1-1. In the second half, PNG’s Karen Kelepai thrilled fans with a powerful strike that temporarily put the home team ahead. However, Fiji’s Cema Nasau equalized in the last moments of the match, ultimately resulting in a 2-2 draw.

PNG coach Erickson Komeng expressed mixed feelings about the outcome, praising his team’s possession and effort while pointing out that they missed opportunities to secure a win: “We could have put them away, but we didn’t do that, and I think it cost us the draw.” He noted that the support from fans could have added pressure but remained optimistic for their upcoming match.

Fiji Kulas coach Angeline Chua commended the competitive spirit displayed on both sides and recognized the areas that need improvement. She mentioned the importance of tactical adjustments and preparing for the physicality and pace of PNG, highlighting that the friendly matches provide a valuable opportunity for growth and learning.

As both teams prepare for their second encounter, there is a hopeful spirit surrounding the matches, reflecting the commitment and resilience of women’s football in Fiji and PNG. The performances in these friendlies highlight the potential for significant achievements in the greater context of international competitions, promising a bright future for both teams.

The final match between the two teams is scheduled for July 2, 2025, and will be a crucial opportunity for both sides to refine their gameplay before the Nations Cup.
