Fiji and Tonga faced off in an exciting 3-3 draw during the opening match of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championships at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Fiji initially took control of the game when forward Uliana Vuniyayawa seized a loose ball in midfield. This early goal inspired Fiji, who quickly added a second when Sisilia Tuvou Kuladina executed a remarkable free-kick from 35 yards, sending the ball soaring into the net past the Tongan goalkeeper.

However, the second half witnessed a resilient response from Tonga. Filimoeatu assisted Kuria Malohofo’ou, who scored with a powerful shot, marking Tonga’s comeback. The momentum shifted further in Tonga’s favor when Tyra Bagiante leveled the score by skillfully finishing a crucial play.

Despite facing a renewed challenge, Fiji remained in contention and came close to regaining the lead through Teonila Levuiciva, but Tonga’s goalkeeper, Temaleti Taufa’ao, made a pivotal save.

As time wound down, Fiji looked set for victory when substitute Grace Lakavutu scored with a creative finish, igniting celebrations on the Fijian bench. Nevertheless, Tonga responded decisively, with Malohifo’ou scoring again to secure a late equalizer, concluding the match with a score of 3-3.
