As 2023 comes to a close, a family is grappling with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Sarla Devi, who was one of three individuals tragically killed in separate road accidents. Ms. Devi, 65, from Korociriciri Rd in Nausori, was struck by a vehicle early Saturday morning while waiting for a bus by the roadside. Despite being rushed to Nausori Health Centre, she was pronounced dead upon arrival, and the driver involved is currently in police custody.
Her son, Nitesh Kumar, expressed his devastation, noting that the family had recently celebrated Christmas together. “My mum was a nice person. We provided her with essentials, and I used to take care of her,” he said, recalling the horrific moment he discovered his mother on the ground. He and a taxi driver attempted to rush her to the hospital. “We felt peace watching her face. We had just celebrated Christmas with cake and juice. I feel her loss the most,” he shared.
Sarla Devi was known for her work as a house helper, often bringing her children along with her. She was also a devoted member of the Grace Samaritan Assembly of God, where Reverend Ronald Ram spoke fondly of her. Mr. Ram, who noted that she had attended the church for about a year, described her as a quiet and faithful individual who regularly sought his prayers, stating, “Though it is shocking and sad, we believe she is in a better place. We continue to pray and support the grieving family.”
In separate incidents, another man lost his life after his vehicle veered off the road on Queens Road in Serua. Police reported that the man was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Additionally, a 34-year-old man succumbed to severe injuries sustained in an accident that occurred on Boxing Day. He was traveling on Waicoka Rd towards Nausori when the driver failed to navigate a bend, resulting in the vehicle crashing into a mud pool. The driver involved fled the scene, and the victim was later pronounced dead after being treated at Nausori Health Centre and transferred to CWM Hospital.
Authorities are currently conducting investigations into all three tragic road incidents.
