Threats to Family After Viral Accident Video Sparks Controversy

The Fiji Police Force has taken action following threats made toward the Verma family after their son, Bhavik Verma, shared a video of a security guard, Iliesa Toga, involved in a recent car accident. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu confirmed that the police are investigating these threats, which were reported to have come through calls and text messages.

The viral video revealed Mr. Toga admitting to his faults in the accident, and it unexpectedly garnered him considerable public support. In stark contrast, the Verma family faced backlash. Driu stated that police have communicated with those who allegedly issued threats, and inquiries are currently underway.

In light of the distressing messages received, Sanjay Verma, Bhavik’s father, has raised concerns about his family’s safety and has requested heightened police presence in their Suva neighborhood.

Despite the negative attention the Verma family has experienced, many Fijians, both locally and abroad, have come to the aid of Mr. Toga, contributing over FJD$3,300 through M-PAiSA as a demonstration of solidarity. Nevertheless, Toga has requested that Fijians maintain a sense of unity and refrain from directing hostility towards the Verma family.

This situation highlights the duality of public reactions in social media scenarios and underscores the importance of community support. While the Verma family has been enduring threats, the ongoing police investigation demonstrates commitment to ensuring safety and addressing issues of public concern. The positive financial support for Mr. Toga serves as a reminder that community compassion can shine through even in challenging times.

Overall, this incident could prompt a dialogue about online behavior and the impacts of social media on individuals and families involved in unforeseen controversies.
