The Fiji Police Force has taken action regarding threats made against the Verma family after their son, Bhavik Verma, released a viral video featuring security guard Liesa Toga, who was involved in a recent car accident. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu confirmed that the police have been made aware of these threats, which were allegedly communicated through phone calls and text messages.
The situation escalated following the posting of the video, which showed Mr. Toga expressing remorse for the accident without realizing he was being filmed. While Mr. Toga received considerable public support, the Verma family faced backlash.
“Reports were made at the Samabula Police Station,” stated ACPO Driu. He added that police have successfully contacted individuals responsible for the threats and that investigations are currently underway.
Sanjay Verma, Bhavik’s father, has voiced concerns regarding the safety of his family amid the alarming communications and has requested enhanced police presence in their neighborhood in Suva.
In a notable twist, many Fijians, both locally and internationally, have come out in support of Mr. Toga, referring to the incident as a “blessing in disguise.” He has received more than FJD$3,300 in donations through M-PAiSA as a demonstration of this support. Despite this positive reception, Mr. Toga has appealed for compassion, urging the public not to show hostility towards the Verma family.
This situation highlights the power of community support in times of distress, showcasing that compassion can prevail even in challenging circumstances. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing conflicts with understanding rather than animosity.
Overall, this incident could lead to greater awareness around the impacts of social media and the responsibilities that come with it. It may also pave the way for constructive dialogues on accountability and empathy within the community.
