Third Attempt Proves Successful

The common adage, “Third time’s a charm,” underscores the importance of resilience and enduring determination against all odds. This phrase rings true for Adi Varanisese Likuyameyame Ravula Rayacarogo, a young woman who tackled life’s challenges and worked tirelessly to accomplish her aspirations.

Ms. Rayacarogo, a 25-year-old police officer, was born in Visa, Vugalei, Tailevu, and she has maternal ties to Vanuabalavu in Lau. After her parents’ separation, her grandmother single-handedly raised her.

In 2018, after completing her primary and secondary education, she decided to work towards a trade diploma in customs services at the Fiji National University. However, due to financial difficulties, she was unable to finish her studies.

“I stayed home with my grandmother and applied for numerous jobs, albeit unsuccessfully,” she stated. Later, she found out about a recruiting process within the police department. After two rejections, she successfully joined the force on her third attempt.

Her training commenced on February 25 at Nasova. It was tough initially as her sole support was her elderly grandmother. However, she believes that with the heart’s willingness and God’s power, nothing is impossible. After 16 weeks of rigorous training, she graduated on June 14, alongside 223 other courageous men and women from Fiji and Tuvalu, at the Fiji Police Training Academy in Nasova.

Though she dreamt of becoming a police officer since childhood, she hesitated at first due to her height. Encouragement from her late grandfather kept her moving forward. “My grandfather would always tell me that I could become a police officer. His words of hope inspired me to keep fighting,” she shared.

Adding to her joy on her graduation day – her parents reunited after a six-year split. Ms. Rayacarogo was genuinely touched and glad. The event, along with the achievement of her childhood dream, brought immense gratitude.

In 10 years, she aspires to rank as a corporal or sergeant. Aside from her professional life, she enjoys spending time with her peers and loved ones, and works at the forensic science unit at Nasova.

Ms. Rayacarogo’s achievement showcases that failure or rejection isn’t the end, but perhaps a stepping stone towards desired happiness and goals.
