The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) intends to set up conservation areas by utilizing landowner unit mapping and developing comprehensive land use plans, according to TLTB environment officer Josua Waqanivalu. He disclosed this plan during a Forest Landscape Restoration workshop held in Nadi, Fiji.
Waqanivalu revealed plans to formalize these areas via leasing agreements with entities focused on environmental conservation. Biodiversity and cultural importance are among the vital criteria for selection of these areas.
In addition to establishing accurate demarcation and mapping to deter unauthorized activities, Waqanivalu said that comprehensive land use strategies for responsible usage are detailed in the plan.
Furthermore, he stated that these conservation areas will lease spaces to help preserve wildlife habitats and cultural heritages. This will involve collaboration with the Ministry of Forestry to find additional sites to lease.
