This festive season is particularly special for Kanchan Kaur as she celebrates the gift of life at the age of 92. Reflecting on her journey during last week’s Senior Citizens Day celebrations, Ms. Kaur shared her belief that a lifetime of healthy eating habits has significantly contributed to her good health and longevity.
While many attribute long life to factors like genetics or sheer luck, Ms. Kaur maintains that the discipline she learned early in life regarding her diet has been vital. Growing up in a household that valued hard work and independence—her father was a timber mill owner in Sawani—instilled in her a strong sense of discipline that she has carried throughout her life.
Now, under the care of her son and daughter-in-law, Angela Sharma, who encourage her to take it easy, Ms. Kaur insists on staying active. She continues to wash her own clothes and manage her daily routines. This commitment to activity, paired with mindful eating, keeps her both physically strong and mentally sharp.
Ms. Kaur advocates for young people to adopt healthier habits, emphasizing that choices made in youth can have lasting impacts on health later in life. Her story serves as a heartening reminder that achieving longevity does not necessarily involve complicated solutions. As she looks forward to her 93rd birthday in March, Ms. Kaur embodies the idea that simple living, a balanced diet, and self-discipline lay the foundation for a long and fulfilling life.
