Thailand has announced plans to release detained Cambodian soldiers once peace is restored, following a recently brokered ceasefire between the two nations. This decision comes after intense discussions during meetings of the General Border Committee (GBC) held in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province, which aimed to address the escalating conflict that had seen heavy clashes along their shared border.
The ceasefire agreement took effect at noon local time and will be monitored by both countries for a period of 72 hours. The Thai government emphasized that the agreement was reached with careful consideration of the ongoing crisis’s potential impact on the economy and Thailand’s reputation on the international stage.
Thai Defense Minister Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanit stated during a press conference that the release of the 18 detained Cambodian soldiers will occur once civilians can safely return to their homes. Additionally, Thailand expressed hope that Cambodian authorities would facilitate the safe return of Thai citizens still in Cambodia.
The coming hours present a crucial test for the mutual trust between the two nations, as they have agreed to maintain open communication channels to combat disinformation that has hindered negotiations in the past. Thailand anticipates assistance from Cambodia in clearing landmines in contested areas, reflecting a collaborative approach towards resolving issues along their border.
As the ceasefire holds, Thai officials are closely monitoring the situation, prepared to defend the nation if hostilities resume. Air Chief Marshal Prapas Sonjaidee emphasized the importance of sincerity in maintaining the ceasefire, stating that if matters are not resolved within the designated 72-hour period, Thailand will revert to its established protocols for national defense.
The situation had been increasingly tense before the ceasefire, with clashes and airstrikes occurring almost daily, causing significant distress for civilians in the border region. The recent developments, however, bring a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution and stability in the area, underscoring the importance of diplomatic efforts in the face of conflict.
