The death toll from catastrophic floods in Texas has risen to at least 78, including at least 28 children, as rescue operations continue for girls missing from Camp Mystic. The search for the missing campers entered its third day amid fears of additional flash flooding, prompting fresh evacuations across the region.
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha reported that a devastating 68 fatalities occurred in Kerr County, the epicenter of the flooding, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed 10 more deaths throughout the state, with 41 individuals still unaccounted for. The situation at Camp Mystic is particularly tragic, as 10 campers and one staff member have yet to be found. “It was nothing short of horrific to see what those young children went through,” noted Abbott, who visited the impacted area on Saturday and pledged ongoing support in rescue efforts.
The floods were fueled by severe rainfall, with the Guadalupe River overflowing after a storm dropped as much as 15 inches (38 cm) of rain on the region last Friday, coinciding with the Independence Day holiday. Chief Nim Kidd of the Texas Division of Emergency Management reported additional fatalities in Burnet, Tom Green, Travis, and Williamson counties.
As rescue workers continue their efforts, over 850 people have already been saved from dire circumstances, some clinging to trees as floodwaters engulfed the area. Sheriff Leitha remarked, “Everyone in the community is hurting,” reflecting the widespread devastation felt throughout the community.
