Tourism transport operator TEWAKA has made a significant move towards environmental sustainability with the addition of four brand new Electric Vehicles (EVs) to its fleet. This $600,000 investment, made by the fully locally owned, multi-award-winning company, aims to enhance its “green” service offerings to customers.

Managing director James Sowane emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that TEWAKA recognizes the growing global trend favoring sustainable travel options. “The integration of EVs into the TEWAKA fleet aligns with our strategic commitment to reducing our carbon footprint,” he articulated in a recent company statement. The new fleet includes four 7-seat Maxus MIFA 9 Elite Electric Vehicles, which not only promise excellent performance with a range of 435 kilometers per charge but also feature high standards in interior quality, seat comfort, and safety.

TEWAKA’s investment reflects a broader movement in Fiji’s transport and tourism sectors towards cleaner and eco-friendly solutions. Similar initiatives are seen at Fiji Airports, which recently became the owner of the largest electric vehicle fleet in the region, comprising 22 EVs. This collective shift towards electric mobility in both sectors illustrates a commitment to sustainability that is gaining traction.

Sowane noted that the EVs are already operational and receiving positive feedback from clients, who are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact. TEWAKA serves as the official transport provider for multiple large hotels and resorts that cater to eco-aware guests, highlighting a growing preference for vehicles with lower emissions.

In the face of challenges, particularly in establishing charging infrastructure, TEWAKA looks forward to government efforts aimed at improving the importation and integration of electric vehicles into the local market. This investment underscores the potential for growth in eco-friendly initiatives that not only benefit the environment but also enhance the overall tourism experience in Fiji.

Overall, TEWAKA’s commitment to sustainability through the addition of electric vehicles positions the company at the forefront of a pivotal transformation in the tourism industry, paving the way for a greener future.
