Tevita Daugunu, the former captain of the Fiji 7s rugby team, has made his comeback in the local rugby 7s scene. He participated with the BLK Lavidi Brothers at the recent RC Manubhai 7s tournament, which concluded yesterday. Although Daugunu and his team reached the finals, they fell short against his former side.
This tournament marked Daugunu’s return to rugby sevens after a stint playing 15s rugby in Canada for the Eastman Warriors Rugby Club. He expressed his enthusiasm about being back in the familiar environment of sevens rugby, stating, “It’s great to be back in the sevens environment, in this heat, and into the physicality of local sevens rugby.”
Now 32 years old, Daugunu was part of the Fiji 7s team that captured a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He is currently vying for a position in the Lavidi side as they prepare for next month’s Coral Coast 7s. Daugunu highlighted the significance of Lavidi as one of the premier local 7s teams, with high expectations attached to their performances due to their success in previous tournaments.
As he prepares for the Coral Coast 7s, Daugunu acknowledges the intense competition for spots in the final squad. The Lavidi Brothers team features several notable players, including fellow former Fiji 7s representative Livai Ikanikoda and former Silktails player Sefanaia Vuli.
This return to local rugby offers Daugunu an opportunity to showcase his skills and contribute to his team’s success, reinforcing the camaraderie and competitive spirit of rugby in Fiji.
In conclusion, Daugunu’s return to the local 7s arena is a promising development, not only for him personally but also for the Lavidi Brothers team as they look to build on their previous successes. His experience and talent could be crucial as they head into upcoming competitions.
