Termite Troubles: Why Homeowners Are Keeping Quiet

Residents in Lautoka are hesitant to report infestations of Asian Subterranean Termites (AST) in their homes, fearing that doing so might lower their property values. This concern was raised by Lautoka City Council Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Anees Khan during a presentation of the city council’s annual reports for 2015-2017 to the Standing Committee on Social Affairs.

In response to a question from committee member Joseph Nand regarding the termite control program in Lautoka, Khan elaborated on the stigma surrounding the infestation. He noted that the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) manages the termite control program, and the municipal council only assists by processing applications. Infestations have been reported in residential areas such as Drasa and Teidamu.

Khan emphasized that residents’ fears are unfounded and urged them to report termite issues rather than remain silent. “We have engaged with the biosecurity authority and the taskforce to develop awareness initiatives. People should not worry about their property values potentially decreasing; in fact, they could benefit from timely reporting,” he stated. He pointed out that if a comprehensive baiting program successfully eradicates the termites and receives certification from biosecurity authorities, property values could actually increase.

A private contractor is currently aiding BAF in the baiting process, and there have been initial successes in treating affected homes. The process of termite assistance applications is handled at the district officer’s office, where staff are available to assist residents.

As awareness grows and resources become more accessible, residents may find the courage to address termite infestations proactively. This situation offers an opportunity for community engagement and could potentially lead to increased property values, creating a more informed and resilient neighborhood.

Summary: Residents in Lautoka are reluctant to report termite infestations due to fears about property values. Lautoka City Council CEO Mohammed Anees Khan highlighted this issue while discussing termite control programs. He reassured that reporting infestations could enhance property values through successful eradication efforts.
